Wear protection by boronizing for power tools
Power tools are tools such as drills, grinders, jigsaws, circular saws and chainsaws for concrete, wood and steel that are used in the professional sector. The daily intensive use thus distinguishes them decisively from the normal do-it-yourself sector. From a design and user perspective, susceptibility to wear processes is a common problem with tools. BorTec provides an effective method for optimizing wear protection on power tools with boronizing.
Applications of boronizing and nitriding for powertools
Due to their mode of operation, drilling and chisel tools are exposed to strong vibrations, while hammer mills and tool holders are subject to surface disintegration and abrasive wear caused, for example, by rock dust. Case-hardened steels in combination with a boronized surface offer excellent protection against surface disruption, adhesion and abrasion while maintaining very good toughness of the base material. In the case of saws for wood and rock, in addition to very good cutting durability, the most important factor is low elongation of the chains during operation. Chain links and pins are subject to high abrasive wear under frictional stress. Nitriding and boriding these components ensures low-wear operation for a long time and a longer service life of borided chains compared to conventional solutions.
Which materials can be treated?
All steel grades used at Power tools can be hardened by boronizing or nitriding. Case-hardening steels and quenched and tempered steels are most frequently used. The BOROCOAT® process from BorTec is particularly suitable for these two steel groups. The combination of case hardening or quenched and tempered steel with a BOROCOAT® diffusion coating ensures unrivaled wear protection of the borided surface with perfect support and toughness of the base material.
For nitriding steels, the nitriding treatment as offered by BorTec is particularly suitable.
BORTEC’S SERVICES FOR POWER TOOL MANUFACTURERS
BorTec offers complete heat treatment in the Powertools area. Complex process combinations such as case hardening, nitriding, boriding, diffusion annealing, vacuum hardening and tempering are handled “from a single source” in short lead times.
